Psalm 41:9
Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.
This verse is quoted in John 13:18, there our Lord was speaking of Judas Iscariot who would betray Him. Here in Psalm 41:9, king David wrote this concerning his son Absalom who wanted David his father killed. This was a terrible and trying time for king David, his own son in the flesh wanted him dead, the one whom he would later cry …”O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!” 2nd Samuel 18:33. But God allowed all this to happen for His Divine reasons, one of which we see clearly when Christ said in John 13:18 …”but that the scripture may be fulfilled…”. It was written in the Scriptures, in God’s Holy Word, thus it must come to pass. This Psalm concerning Judas Iscariot was written 1000 years before the Lord Jesus was born of the virgin Mary. This goes to show us that God had a plan long before any of us came onto the scene. It is not of us who ‘decide’ to follow Christ, it is of God who shows mercy in saving sinners and leaving others in their sinful state. Romans 9:16 “So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.”
