Psalm 40:7

Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me

This Psalm is quoted again in Hebrews 10:7.  We can get a better understanding when reading the preceding 2 verses.  Hebrews 10:5-7 “ Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:  In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.  Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.”  You see, animal sacrifices that took place in the Old Testament could not remove one speck of sin from a person.  These animal sacrifices pointed to our One True Sacrifice which is the Lord Jesus Christ.  It was man that sinned so it was man that had to die (Gen 2:17), not animals.  You see, Psalm 40:7 is again a Messianic Psalm.  It speaks of Christ our Saviour praying to the Father that He will be obedient to all that God commands.  And God commanded that the Lord Jesus suffer the penalty of man’s sin.  Of course Christ did not suffer for all of mankind, had He then all of mankind sins would be vindicated, but God tells us specifically that there will be many people being thrown in hell to pay the penalty themselves, Matt 7:13 “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:”.  Let us not think that we can do anything to help Christ pay for our sins.  His payment for sin made full satisfaction to God’s law.  To bring any other “work” than that of the Lord Jesus Christ would be to bring another gospel.
