Psalm
37:39
But the salvation of the
righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of
trouble.
The first part of this verse is plain language that tells us God is the One who does the saving. Salvation is of our Almighty Sovereign God!, in accordance with His Divine elective program as we read about in Romans 9:11 “For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;” Now, because we have been made a child of God our strength is of the Lord. God is always and forever with us, He said that He would never leave us nor forsake us (Heb.13:5) but here in Psalm 37:39 God is pointing out the fact that in time of trouble we draw our strength from God. Who allows these troubles to come upon us, it is God Himself, He allows us to encounter tribulation in this world in order to build us up spiritually. Remember what we read in 2Cor.12:9-10 “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.” The context here in 2 Cor.12 is the Apostle Paul having to deal with someone who was constantly oppressing him. The Apostle called it a ‘messenger of satan’. But God brought this upon the Apostle to humble him (vs.7) and to have him rely upon the strength of Christ in time of need (vs.9). The result of this experience Paul had was that he became a better evangelist. It is the desire of all God’s children to become better evangelists, may it be that God through our Lord Jesus Christ would grant us the grace to endure trouble for His Glory.
