Psalm
37:18
The LORD knoweth the days of
the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever.
God knows our days. He is aware of the length of days of the righteous as well as the unrighteous. But here God is focusing on those that are upright, that is those whom God has saved in accordance with His divine elective program (Rom.9:11). These elect whom God has chosen have been given an inheritance that will last for ever. When does a person inherit something? Answer: When the Testator dies. If your name is placed within someone’s Last Will and Testament then you will receive the promised inheritance when the one who wrote you into his will dies. This is exactly what Hebrews 9:15-16 is speaking of:
“And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by
means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the
first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal
inheritance. For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the
death of the testator.”
When Christ who is eternal God
died for the sins of the elect He in actuality placed into effect His Last Will
and Testament which is the New Covenant.
Now the beneficiaries, which are God’s elect, will receive the promise
of the inheritance which, as Psalm 37:18 states, is for ever.
