Psalm 36:7
How excellent is thy lovingkindness, O God! therefore the children of
men put their trust under the shadow of thy wings.
Of course God does not have physical wings, God is Spirit
(John 4:24). In the very least God is
pointing out two things in this Psalm.
- God,
in His condescending love towards us, uses earthly analogies in order to
help our earthly minds understand the
great love He has for His people.
He typifies Himself as a great eagle who is able to protect and
care for His own children by bearing them upon His wings. Exodus 19:4 “Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare
you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself.” The Israeli exodus out of Egypt was a
picture of God swooping down upon the kingdom of satan and gathering all
those whom He desired to save by placing them on His wings. Also read Deut.32:9-14
- Notice
how God here is using language to associate our trust and His wings. Psalm 57:1 “<<To the chief
Musician, Altaschith, Michtam of David, when he fled from Saul in the
cave.>> Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul
trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge,
until these calamities be overpast.”
This trust we have in God is of the deepest kind, it involves our
souls. Truly we shouldn’t fear
what man can do unto us because man can only destroy our body, but God can
destroy both body and soul in hell (Matt.10:28) Our Lord Jesus cried out against the nation of Israel when
He proclaimed in Luke 13:34 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the
prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have
gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her
wings, and ye would not!” National
Israel as well as all of mankind reject Christ, but God is faithful to
draw those whom the Father has given to Christ (John 6:39) and these are
the ones who will gather for refuge under the mighty wings of Christ.
